We are asked several times each week about what are the best over the
counter acne treatments.
Basically, they are all different formulations
of the same two active ingredients; benzoyl peroxide and salicylic
acid. These are both considered "comedolytics," which means they
prevent or treat plugging of pores. Benzoyl peroxide also has some
ability to kill the bacteria that causes inflammatory bumps in acne.
Even though the ingredients in the over the counter treatments may be
similar, there are large differences in price. For the money, I think
the "Clean and Clear" line is a good choice. I like this line because
it fairly priced, as opposed to the products on the infomercials, and
has the highest available over the counter percentage of the benzoyl
peroxide(BP) and salicylic acid. I like the 10% BP wash the best.
Some
people are allergic to BP so if you develop a rash, discontinue the
product. Also, be patient. Acne treatments can take up to 6-8 weeks
before a detectable improvement is seen.
